Operation Christmas Child
From the 9/21/16 Weekly Update by Marcy Snyder
We’ve been packing boxes for Operation Christmas Child for quite a few years, but this past year, Steve and I also spent a day working at the Baltimore Processing Center inspecting boxes to be crated for overseas travel. It was interesting to see items packed that I had not thought of. During this visit, we met Loretta Tharp, our area coordinator who piqued my interest to get involved year round. I just started as the media relations team member for the North Capital Area and attended a project leader training recently. Since our church is going to participate in this year’s event, I’d like to relay some information about the program.
Did you know that there are 2.2 billion children on earth of which nearly 2 billion of these live in developing countries. In 2014, 102 million people were affected by natural disasters of which over 50 percent of them were children. OCC shoebox statistics tell us that somewhere in the world, every 30 seconds a child comes to saving knowledge of Jesus Christ all because of a shoebox gift. There were 22,608 shoeboxes collected last year in our geographic area. Our goal this year is 25,000. Can you believe that there were 11,213,010 collected worldwide last year?
When a child receives a shoebox, they also receive a copy of the Greatest Journey, which is OCC’s follow-up program. This program is implemented through a global church network to help children learn how to know and follow Jesus. It is a 12 lesson discipleship program which includes Bible stories and Scripture memorization teaching them how to follow Christ in their daily lives.
As you think about packing your box(es) this year, remember there are three different ages categories that can be selected after you determine if you would like to pack a girl or boy box. Consider a quality “wow” toy such as a doll, soccer ball with pump or stuffed animal. Then add other fun toys, hygiene items and school supplies. Most importantly, pray for the child who will receive your gift. You can also include a personal note and photo. If you donate your $7 shipping charge on line, you will be able to follow your box to the country where it is sent. We have preprinted shoeboxes that will be distributed in the coming weeks.
