Need For a Makeover?

| A while back a businessman friend shared about a seminar he had recently attended. The consultant made this riveting statement: “Your organization is perfectly designed to get the results you are getting.” I had to think that through a bit. At first I pushed back, but the more I considered it, the more I realized that it had to be true. I suppose I can blame others or unfortunate circumstances for stagnation or results that do not change. But, in the end, the consultant is right. The design of our ministries is perfectly fashioned to produce the conversions, visitors, new attendees, and baptisms we are getting…or, not getting. Perhaps we do not like that assessment. Maybe it is like what author Nassim Taleb says, “we credit our keen expertise when we are growing and producing but blame the winds of misfortune that are beyond our control when our results go negative.” I know I have certainly done that. You know, “people are too hardened to the Gospel” and “they are satisfied as they are” and other rationale that goes through our mind when we think of reaching out. “It is beyond our control that we don’t see people coming our way.” So, if we want our results to be better, then we must redesign our structures and strategies to get different results. After all, did we not learn that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results? Is that what we are doing? Oh, admittedly change is painful and uncomfortable – not to mention the work and risk that go with it. But, if we don’t change, our results will continue to be meager. Of course, it is not just the church that must change. But we ourselves must change and that can be even more painful. So, yes, Lord, we need a makeover. Give us, the church, and each of us, a compassion, a courage, and a strategy to reach those around us with the liberating message of the Gospel. Re-ignite us and aid us to alter our structures and approaches to bring greater effectiveness! May God give you and me the insight and the courage to make those changes! A new makeover is a must if we want different and better results! Join me in the journey! |
