When We Have Christ, We Have It All

Pastor Randy Corbin, Transitional Lead Pastor

It took me just a couple of hours to realize there was something askew about the courtship.

A friend of mine was so eager that Linda and I meet his fiancée, so we arranged for it.

Yet, while he seemed very attentive to her, she seemed otherwise focused.  She was fascinated with her diamond, commenting how she had seen a few other rings she wanted him to get for her as well.  Also, due to her work life, she was happy for their relationship to help her with her car and the many errands she could not handle because of her schedule.

Before the afternoon was out, it was obvious to Linda and me that our friend’s fiancée was far more interested in our friend’s possessions and what he could do for her than her real interest in him.  It made us feel both sad and concerned.  So it did not surprise us when the engagement ended.

Candidly, I have too often seen myself reflected in this young woman.  Too much of my prayer time and my communion/reflection time with Jesus is centered on the seeking of provisions, protections, and interventions that I want Jesus to do for me.

I want wisdom, peace, strength against temptation, favor, and the solution to problems as well as the opening of doors.  I even dream of God’s giving me these wants.
Shamefully, I can be no different than my friend’s wife to be.

Jesus yearns for those who will simply love Him for Himself, who will seek to know Him more deeply, and who will intimately engage Him the way true lovers engage one another.

You see, when we have Christ, we have it all.  Oh the warmth and true joy when we exchange this lowly life of Jesus as sugar daddy to the higher Christian life of Jesus as true Lover-Friend.

So, join me in putting aside our “give me” lists and turn our hearts to His heart.  Let’s cleanse our thought life from being consumed on getting God’s help and answers and move toward knowing Christ, loving Christ, surrendering to Christ, and serving Christ.

For when we have Christ, we have it all!  He then becomes our All in All!
