Finding Our Way
Pastor Randy Corbin, Transitional Lead Pastor
As a teenager, I would commonly visit a camp for the blind at least once each summer. I found it fascinating to watch those without sight navigating the grounds. I observed the new arrivals brimming with excitement and anticipation as they were told about the swimming pool and other recreational activities. Learning new skills and making new friends caused them to thrill with the prospects. But, almost as soon as the orientation ended, I could observe a change of expression on several faces: from anticipation to apprehension. Many had never been to the camp before. They did not know the terrain or the location of various buildings. What if they took a tumble and injured themselves. There is some parallel for us every time we move into a new year. We too thrill at the prospects of the year: advances, new ministries, the anticipation that God will show up. But in actuality we too are blind. Frankly, along with blessings, there well could be bane. Along with additions, there could just as easily be subtractions. Who knows? A call that announces a promotion, a birth, a proposal, could just as possible be a word of a tragedy, critical illness, of the loss of pivotal families. We face the year as blind as those sightless campers of the past. I soon discovered that the camp for the blind had guide-wires all along the walk ways of the camp. Should a camper be uncertain of his way, he could reach out and follow the marked guide-wire and it could take him/her to where he/she desired to go. In addition, companions were provided who were either sighted or veterans of the camp and they could speak encouragement and guidance to those campers. God has graciously agreed to accompany us through 2020. He is our companion to assist us in navigating our paths through thickets and bypaths. If God is for us, who can be against us? Further, we have the guide-wires of God’s Word, full of wisdom and direction for us. When we face pain or uncertainty, we can reach out and take hold of the guide of God’s Word to give comfort, promise, and counsel. Hence, we enter 2020 full of faith and confidence in what God is going to do, to unveil and to provide. Certainly, there may be potholes and pitfalls along the way, but we are one with the One who always shepherds with purpose. So, let us not fear the unknown, but rather with courage let us joyfully believe that a wonderful adventure is ahead for us and our ministries. Why? Because our captain is the one who prepared the journey for us for our good and His glory. Buckle your seat-belts and watch where God takes us! |
