God’s Eternal Fascination

Pastor Randy Corbin, Transitional Lead Pastor

I share the befuddlement of Catherine of Siena (1347-1380) and write these words inspired by her thoughts.

God infinite.  God independent.  God omniscient.  God omnipotent.  God All-Sufficient.  God All-Supplied.  God Majestic.  God Magnificent.  Eternal wisdom.  Eternal beauty.  Eternal Word.

And yet, You have need of Your creature?  How inconceivable indeed!

The creature has disobeyed You, yet You clothed him.  He scorned You and You delivered him.  He broke covenant with You and You incarnated Yourself to run after him.

Since time began, You have insisted on running after the creature.  Even though he spurned You, spit upon You, slapped You, scourged You, and staked You to a cross, Your heart burned for him, broke for him, and bled for him.  You even died for him.

Since the creature’s first appearance, you have been drunk with desire for her salvation.  Still today she runs away from You and you go looking for her.  You who need nothing desperately track us to lavish Your love upon us, the creature.  To take the creature, to perfect her, to purify her, to pledge Yourself in marriage to her.

So utterly irrational but so mysteriously exhilarating – that He should yearn for us.  The Beautiful One pursuing beastly creatures.

“Amazing love!  How can it be that Thou, my God, shouldst die for me!”

God’s eternal fascination!  And, it still has not changed!  Hallelujah!
